Post Operative Care Instructions

Following your oral surgery procedure at Metrowest Oral Surgical Associates, it’s essential to follow postoperative care guidelines to promote healing and ensure a smooth recovery.

While the following instructions offer general recommendations, please note that your surgeon will provide specific instructions tailored to your individual procedure and needs during your postoperative consultation.

Your comfort and wellbeing are our top priorities, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Wound Care and Bleeding

Avoid disturbing the surgical area on the day of the procedure. Refrain from rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound.

Some bleeding is normal; use firm pressure on a gauze pad placed over the area for 30 minutes if bleeding is excessive.

Contact our office if bleeding persists for further instructions.

Swelling Management

Swelling is common after surgery. Apply ice to the cheek near the surgery site continuously for the first 36 hours to minimize swelling.

Keep physical activities to a minimum to prevent exacerbating swelling.

Diet and Fluid Intake

Drink plenty of fluids and stick to soft foods on the day of surgery.

Return to a normal diet as soon as possible unless instructed otherwise by our team.

Pain Management

Take pain medication as soon as the local anesthetic wears off, following the prescribed dosage instructions.

Use over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol or ibuprofen as directed for moderate pain. Severe pain should be managed with prescribed medication.

Avoid alcohol and driving while taking pain medication.

Oral Hygiene

Clean your mouth thoroughly after each meal starting the day after surgery. Use warm saltwater rinses multiple times a day and brush gently around the surgical areas.

Maintain good oral hygiene to promote healing.

Activity and Physical Limitations

Limit physical activities immediately following surgery to prevent complications such as throbbing or bleeding. Refrain from strenuous exercise for a few days.

Resume normal activities gradually as you feel comfortable.

Remember, our team will provide personalized instructions based on your specific procedure and needs. If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team. At Metrowest Oral Surgical Associates, your health and comfort are our priority, and we’re here to support you throughout your healing journey.
